Along the Mississippi eagles use the river as a flyway. The river narrows near Wabasha which brings many birds into the area. The river doesn't freeze, so Dec to March is ideal to visit. We stopped on one of our trips from the twin cities and learned a great deal about the eagle ambassadors at the National Eagle Center.

We took a behind the scenes tour which allows you to see the birds up close. The highlight is that each person got to build an enhancement for the eagles. This involved hiding food in a contraption of cardboard, newspaper, rope and other pieces to give the eagles something different to tear apart. While it took us twenty minutes to build these items, it took minutes or less for the eagles to tear them apart.

Latch, the eagle, is blind in his left eye so can't be released into the wild.
